Abstract
The popularity of Disney's Peter Pan (1953) is well-earned. Its beautiful animation and excellent voice acting cemented it as a cultural touchstone, one that has inspired its own adaptations and spin-offs in media ranging from films and video games to in-park parades and shows. This far-reaching popularity seems appropriate, given the original popularity of the stage play upon which it was based.

But even as the story is retold over the years, Peter Pan's theatrical roots are never lost completely. Many productions seek to offer new interpretations, but nowhere is the story's rich theatrical tradition maintained and most evident than in the character of J.A.S. Hook. His appearance in scholarly discourse often focuses on his role as Peter's foil, or his symbolic representation of that most dreaded state (adulthood), or even as a symbol for Charles II. But more than this, Capt. Hook is the anchor that ties adaptations of Peter Pan to its theatrical ancestry.
This presentation will offer a comparative analysis of Hook's characterization in the original stage play and Disney's Peter Pan to examine the ways Hook maintains the traditions of the character as he originally appeared onstage. From his design and swordplay to the actors who brought him to life, Hook's theatrical legacy shadows him more closely than a ticking crocodile.
